DISCIPLINE PLAN

It is the purpose of this information to establish a safe and orderly school environment in which the rights of all students are protected and the efforts of the teachers to maintain order and teach students are supported. The hierarchy of punishments ranges from the less severe to the more severe, ultimately reaching the point where referral to the Grundy County Discipline Committee is recommended. It is the philosophy of the faculty and administration that although expulsion from school is a matter with serious and often lasting implications for the student and his/her family, it is a step which circumstances necessarily dictate either because of the severe nature of the offense(s) committed or because of habitual nature of the violations committed by the student.

The guiding principle of this or any other good system of school and classroom management is that its purpose is not to punish, but to teach and encourage students to accept responsibility for their actions and decisions and to regard the rights of others with as much reverence as their own.

  STAGES

Demerits: A demerit will be given for each classroom violation.  Each violation will be handled by the teacher until there are five (5) demerits.  After administering the consequences on the fifth (5th) demerit, the student and the record will be referred to the administration.  A parent or guardian contact will be made within five (5) days to discuss the student’s discipline report and to explain the next level of consequences (Detention).

Detention: Detention will consist of one (1) hour supervised session before and after school. Detention will be held in conjunction with Time-for-Time during Saturday School; however students will not do detention and Time-for-Time during the same session. If students need to meet both requirements (detention and Time-for-Time) during Saturday School, detention will be 8:30-9:30 am and Time-for-Time will be conducted from 9:30-2:00 pm. At the end of detention, a contact meeting will be held with a parent or guardian to discuss the student's discipline report and to explain the next level of consequences (ISS Phase 1).

ISS Phase 1: In-School Suspension Phase 1 (ISS) is a supervised school day classroom conducted in an alternative setting.  Student(s) will be given a writing assignment from various subjects and the Student Handbook. Phase 1 will be considered a classroom absence for each classroom. Any graded assignments/test will result in a grade of zero. Phase I students may be transported to school as they would on a normal school day, but must report promptly to ISS. At the end of the second ISS, a meeting will be held with a parent or guardian to discuss the student's discipline report and to explain the next level of consequences (ISS Phase 2).

ISS Phase 2: In School Suspension Phase 2 is an absence from the classroom and all assignments and/or testing will result in a zero fro each class. Phase 2 days will be conducted at the Alternative School with assignments from various subjects and the Student Handbook. Phase 2 days will not be made up in Time-for-Time. A meeting will be held at the end of the ISS Phase 2 stage with a parent or guardian to discuss the student's discipline report and to explain the next level of consequences (Alternative School).

TARDINESS

Tardiness will be defined as being in the hall (entirely outside the classroom door) when the bell begins to ring. All students tardy for first period will report to the office for an admission slip to class. Teachers will record tardies for first period and all other classess and will turn into the office a record of weekly tardies on Thursday afternoon. (No EXCEPTIONS). All tardies will be tallied by the office staff and placed on Monday's absentee sheet. Teachers will inform their students of the number of hours detention they owe. 1 TARDY WILL EQUAL 1 DETENTION.
