Grundy COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION

STANDARD SCHOOL ATTIRE

School dress and grooming shall be modest, moderate, and decent. Apparel or appearance that tends to draw attention to an individual rather that to a learning situation must be avoided. In matters of opinion, the judgment of teachers and administrators will prevail. Any student failing to comply with this will be counseled on an individual basis. Action will be taken to correct the problem if it is deemed necessary.

I.  GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

A.  The Standard School Attire policy will be in effect during the school day, detention, time for time, and summer programs throughout the school year.

B.  Students' dress and grooming will be appropriate, clean, and neat.

C.  All clothing and appearance must meet reasonable standards of safety and not disrupt or distract the educational process.

D.  Shorts will be permitted from the first day of school until the day before Fall Break (October 17) and from the first day following Spring Break (March 30) until the end of the school year.

E.  Manufacturer trademarks, if any, must be no larger than two inches.

F.  Grundy County logos are the only logos permitted and are not limited in size.  (Logos are defined as writing, pictures, or images).

G.  Underwear must be covered and not seen.

H.  All clothing must be hemmed.

I.  Students will wear clothing of appropriate size.  Appropriate sizes are defined as no more than one size smaller of larger (length and width) than the student’s actual clothing size.  All pants, shorts, skirts, or skorts must fit at the waist and must not sag.

J.  We encourage all shirts and blouses to be tucked inside the pants.  However, for comfort, shirts may be worn on the outside as long as they meet the midriff restrictions (no skin showing) and the pants meet the size, belt, and waistline requirements.

K.  Chests and midriffs must be covered.

L.  Pants, jeans, shorts, Capri pants, skirts, skorts, are to be solid in color. All shirts, and all blouses are to be solid    

in color, or combination of color (stripes, plaids, polka dots, print, etc.)** Print is defined as cloth printed with a design 

or pattern, not logos.

M.  A single blazer, suit jacket, vest, sweater, or cardigan will be permitted as a garment that may be worn over the standard attire top.  These garments must be solid in color, or combination of color (stripes, plaids, polka dots, print, etc.) and must be worn over a shirt or dress with a collar. ** Print is defined as cloth printed with a design or pattern, not logos.

 II.  ACCEPTABLE ATTIRE AND STANDARDS

A.  Full length pants (slacks or denim jeans)

      1.  Dress style or casual dress style

      2.  Straight-leg or boot-cut

B.  Cropped pants and straight-legged Capri pants

       1.  Dress style or casual dress style

C.  Shorts, jumpers, skirts, skorts, or dresses

       1.  Must be no shorter than the top of the kneecap while standing up.

       2.  Dresses must have a collar, short or long sleeves, and buttons to the collar. The top button is the only button   

            that may be left unbuttoned

D.  Leggings

      1.  Outer garment must meet requirements listed above

E.  Pants, slack, jeans, shorts, skirts, and skorts

      1.  Elastic waistbands must be worn at the waist and do not require a belt.

      2.  Those with belt loops must be worn at the waist and a belt is required

F.  Blouses or shirts

      1.  Solid color or combination of color (stripes, plaids, polka dots, print, etc.)** print is defined as cloth 

           printed with a design or pattern, not logos.

      2.  Short or long sleeves

      3.  Polo, dress style with buttons, or turtleneck

      4.  Polo or dress style must have buttons along the front opening to the collar with the top button at the collar left 

           unbuttoned.

G.  Crew-neck T-Shirts

      1.  Solid color or combination of color (stripes, plaids, polka dots, print, etc.)** print is defined as cloth printed 

           with a design or pattern, not logos.

      2.  Short or long sleeves

H.  T-Shirts with or without sleeves

      1.  Worn as undergarment only

      2.  No display of writing, pictures, or images

I.  Sweatshirts

    1.  Solid color or combination of color ( stripes, plaids, polka dots, print, etc.)** print is defined as cloth 

         printed with a design or pattern, not logos. 

    2.  No display of writing, pictures, or images (except Grundy county logo or the student’s individual elementary  

         school logos)  

J.  Hooded sweatshirts 

     

     Hoodies can be worn, but the hood attachment would be treated as a hat. The hood cannot be  

     worn on the head inside the school building.

K.  Footwear

     1.  All students must wear shoes

     2.  Laces on shoes or sneakers must be tied.

     3.  Sandals are permitted.

 III.  UNACCEPTABLE ATTIRE (WILL NOT BE PERMITTED)

A.  Blouses or shirts without buttons along the front openings

B.  No sleeveless tops, tank tops, or tops with spaghetti strings

C.  Holes

D.  See-through clothing

E.  No camisole

F.  Flip-flops or house shoes (Flip flops are defined as not having a strap on the back or not having a raised back on  

      the heel)

G.  Clothing advertising substances that are illegal for teens (Drugs, alcohol, tobacco products) or language or writing  

       that is otherwise inappropriate or offensive (sex, profanity, racial or ethnic slurs, gang related attire, etc.)  

H.  Tattoos that display drugs, alcohol or tobacco products, or gang-or sex-related words or images (must not be seen  

     at anytime)  

I.  Heavy chains, regular chains, (including those worn on clothing or used to attach wallets) spikes or spiked 

     accessories, nose/eye rings or pins, tongue spikes, or visible body piercing other than traditional ear wear.

J.  Oversized jewelry. Oversized belt buckles (Belts may not hang down as a “tail” from the belt loop)

K.  Inappropriate head coverings such as bandanas, scarves, sweatbands, caps, do-rags, or hairnets.  (Caps worn to    

     school must be left in locker all day during school hours or they will be taken by administration and returned at their 

     discretion.)

L.  Cargo pants

M.  Any wearing apparel or physical appearance that may be a disruption to the educational process.  (Example:  unnatural hair color such as blue, green, purple, pink, etc. or other hair styles that call attention to the individual.  Example:  spiked hair style).

N.  Outerwear such as raincoats, windbreakers, cold-weather jackets, caps, and coats may not be worn inside the school building.  

P. No sweatpants of any kind

 IV.  ATTIRE FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS

A.  Principals will be allowed up to 20 days at their discretion

B.  Principals must give teachers and students notification of what they will allow on that day.

C.  Principals will have the authority to approve occasional variations from the Standard School Attire for particular 

      groups of students.

 V.  CONSEQUENCES

A.  First Offense:  Two (2) hours detention and change to appropriate dress before returning to class.

B.  Second Offense:  Three (3) days In School Suspension (ISS Phase I) and change to appropriate dress before    

      returning to class.

C.  Third Offense:  Three (3) days Out of School Suspension (ISS Phase 2).  Student will be sent home for the   

      remainder of the day and the next three school days.  The student and parent will be informed of a more restrictive  

      dress code which the student will be required to follow for the remainder of the school year.  Shirts will be collared 

      with no print and slack (not jeans).  Dress or tennis shoes only.
